Subnautica is releasing a new, standalone expansion set in a new arctic environment. The expansion is called Subnautica: Below Zero and will be available sometime in the next few months through Early Access.
Subnautica is an undersea survival-sim where players chart unknown, alien waters and build up their bases to survive the harsh conditions. Unlike the temperate waters of the base game, the Below Zero expansion is set in a new icy region of planet 4546B after the events of the original game.
Developer Unknown Worlds is promising the same gameplay style as the original Subnautica, but with new mechanics like temperature management. Since Below Zero is going to be an Early Access release, Unknown Worlds is going to tweak the game based on the feedback from players.
"The concept of Below Zero is still developing. We are keeping the core gameplay mechanics, such as base building and open-ended exploration. We are also exploring new ones, such as thermal management, and more voiced dialogue at the core of the plot."
Subnautica came out in Early Access back in 2014 and quickly became a popular VR survival game, though the game is playable on a standard PC as well. Subnautica left Early Access earlier this year and now it seems that the developers are looking for the next adventure in the Subnautica universe.
