Super Robot Wars T is officially out today on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. I received my shipping confirmation this morning, so it should be in my hands soon. Once it arrives, I'll share more impressions on Axe of the Blood God.
In the meantime though, I've been receiving a lot of tweets and emails asking whether it's worth picking up SRW T, which version to buy, and where to find it. So here's a quick rundown of Super Robot Wars T is all about.
What is Super Robot Wars T?
Super Robot Wars T is the latest entry in the long-running Super Robot Wars series—a franchise that first got its start on the Game Boy. It's a mashup of multiple giant robot shows that melds their various storylines into one big overarching plot. At its best, it's an extremely faithful tribute to the history of the giant robot genre, beautifully remixing everything from Mobile Suit Gundam to Voltron.
Every Super Robot Wars has a unique series list. You can find the full series for Super Robot Wars T below.
- Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
- Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness
- Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
- The King of Braves GaoGaiGar
- Getter Robo Armageddon
- The Brave Express Might Gaine
- Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
- Aura Battler Dunbine
- Invincible Robot Trider G7
- Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack – Beltorchika’s Children (Units only)
- Armored Trooper Votoms, Armored Trooper Votoms: The Last Red Shoulder (Units only), Armored Trooper Votoms: Big Battle
- Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam, Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Skull Heart (Units only), Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Steel Seven (Units only)
- Mazinger Z Infinity
- Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
- Aura Battler Dunbine: Tales of Neo Byston Well
- Mobile Fighter G Gundam
- Gun X Sword
- Expelled from Paradise
- Cowboy Bebop
- Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX
- Magic Knight Rayearth
There are a few standouts for the American audience. Both Magic Knight Rayearth and Cowboy Bebop make their debut, continuing the trend toward general sci-fi anime over pure mecha. King of Braves GaoGaiGar returns after a long absence, as does Aura Battler Dunbine. G Gundam is back, and G Gundam is awesome. It's a pretty solid lineup in general.
Can It Be Played in English?
Yes, Super Robot Wars T has once again been blessed with an English localization. You just have to make sure that you buy the Asian version, which is available on both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Don't expect the greatest localization in the world, as it's clearly done on a budget. But it should be at least serviceable, making it a clear step up from the word salad of Moon Dwellers.
One caveat: The Nintendo Switch version apparently lacks the Day 1 DLC found in other versions. That means that you'll miss out on a special mech, as well as a couple missions. It's not a huge deal ultimately, but it's something to weigh when deciding which version to buy.
Where Should I Buy It?
You can find the Japanese versions on Amazon, including the Premium Animation Song & Sound Edition that includes a host of original music. It's an extremely steep markup, but potentially worth it if you don't care about the English localization. Yesasia has the English version of Super Robot Wars T for $75, and copies are also starting to crop up on eBay. With import fees, you'll have to pay a pretty penny; but if you're willing to wait a little bit, costs should drop pretty fast.
Is Super Robot Wars T a Good Entry Point for a First Timer?
With a handful of exceptions, many of the Super Robot Wars games are intended to be standalone experiences that can be enjoyed by anyone. That makes deciding on a new Super Robot Wars game a matter of which platform you want to play it on, and whether or not you like the shows it features. If you like Space Battleship Yamato, for instance, and you only want to play on your TV, maybe consider Super Robot Wars V, which is also in English.
As the first game on the Switch, Super Robot Wars T is certainly enticing as it means you can play on both your television and in handheld mode. That alone probably makes it the single best entry point to the series for a lot of gamers. I know I'll be picking it up.
In any case, Super Robot Wars T is now available on both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. If you want more information on the series, check out my (admittedly out of date) Super Robot Wars primer. I also talk about why it's one of my comfort food games in this article. Finally, subscribe to Axe of the Blood God, because I'm sure I'll be talking about it at least a few times over the next month or so.
