Super Smash Bros Ultimate Adds Piranha Plant, Free for a Limited Time Only

The little plant that could.

Today during the Super Smash Bros Ultimate Direct, Nintendo announced one final new fighter coming to the upcoming Switch fighter. No, it's not Waluigi. Instead, one assist trophy is getting an upgrade into a full fighter! The Piranha Plant, pot and all, is joining the roster.

Piranha Plant fights from its distinctive pot, using it for defense on the battlefield. Its leaves can be used as a propeller to keep it aloft and it can spit out spiked balls for longer-ranged attacks. And if you power up to a Final Smash special attack, it can call on a giant Petey Piranha to lay waste to the battlefield.

There are a few caveats to Piranha Plant's inclusion though. One, it won't be ready until a couple months after launch. The second is that Piranha Plant will be completely free for a limited time. You can either pre-purchase the digital version of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, or register a physical copy on MyNintendo by January 31, 2019.

Like other Smash fighters, Piranha Plant is also getting an Amiibo. The all-new Amiibo figure won't be available until February 15, 2019.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is coming to Nintendo Switch on December 7, 2018. To learn more about the upcoming fighter you can check out our Character Guide and Everything We Know articles.
