"Surprise" Dragon Quest Announcement Coming in June Reignites Smash Bros. Character Rumor

Dragon Quest is going to have a Smashing time this E3. Probably.

"Surprising" Dragon Quest news is on its way, according to Japanese pop culture/manga publication Weekly Shonen Jump. The reveal of said news roughly lines up with Square Enix's E3 2019 press conference. Exciting stuff! What's it gonna be about (probably Loto/Erdrick coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)?

News about the Dragon Quest-related Shonen Jump announcement went up earlier today on the Japanese game news site Ryokutya2089. The short blurb was summarized by Twitter user Nibel, who has a good track record of giving accurate summaries of information published on Japanese websites. Not that there's much to translate in this instance beyond "A Dragon Quest surprise is coming, please look forward to it over E3."

Dragon Quest fans on social media speculate there's a good chance the announcement is about series hero Loto (sometimes localized in the West as "Erdrick") coming to Smash Ultimate. Whispers about Loto's entry into the Smash arena started circulating earlier this year. Moreover, it's hard to imagine Square Enix is already working on another Dragon Quest entry—or that said entry would be announced at a Western-centric show like E3 (the bulk of Dragon Quest's audience lies in Japan).

Even though a mainline Dragon Quest announcement is unlikely to happen at E3 2019, Western audiences still have plenty of Dragon Quest goodness coming to their plates. The Switch iteration of Dragon Quest 11 is filled with new goodies, and it's coming this Fall. Before then, Dragon Quest Builders 2 comes to Switch and PlayStation 4 on July 12.
