A protest against esports was held at a recent Swiss soccer game over the weekend. Match officials were forced to stop a match temporarily in order to clean up the pitch after protestors threw controllers and tennis balls.
At one point you can see what looks to be a DualShock controller with the words "Fuck Esports" scribbled onto the handles. Pretty apt considering this was a protest against esports. The tennis balls make less sense.
Associated Press reported that during the Young Boys vs Basel game in the Swiss Super League (thanks Eurogamer) the Young Boys fans donned black hoodies and threw the tennis balls and controllers onto the field. They also brought with them a flag with the video "pause" icon. They were joined by the Basel fans in a show of unity from physical sports fans against esports.
In one of the weirdest anti-esports/video game movements I've ever seen, Swiss football fans threw console controllers on the field of a game and held up play to protest esports. "Fuck esports" was on the controller, with a huge "esports are shit" banner. The salt is real. pic.twitter.com/wok9tYF7Vq— Rod Breslau (@Slasher) September 24, 2018
The fans were protesting the fact that these sports teams were spending money on their esports arms, when they believe funds could be better used for non-esports expenditures. In North America several major esports teams are backed by traditional sports teams, though you don't see anti-esports protests at Golden State Warriors games which owns two esports teams.
Either way the match continued after the protest where the Young Boys won 7-1.
