Being pursued by ghoulish humanoid nightmares through a megacorporation's sprawling blacksite lab while an unhinged AI taunts and threatens you via loudspeaker? Yup, that sounds like a System Shock game, and this new pre-alpha gameplay teaser of OtherSide Entertainment's System Shock 3 delivers on all counts.
Some of the monstrosities trying to kill the game's protagonist debuted in the game's super-short Unity Keynote teaser at Game Developers Conference 2019, but here we get a much better look at the drones, mutants, and cyborgs that have taken residence in the game's TriOptimum facility. The teaser also shows glimpses of automated turrets, security cameras, weapons that can freeze and electrocute enemies, and the player character's trusty wrench.
SHODAN's narration is in classic, malevolent form throughout the teaser. Hearing the series' rogue AI say "our little dance has only just begun" in that distorted voice is creepy enough. Put that line over footage of a spider mech controlled by a screaming, limbless human torso, and it becomes downright chilling. System Shock 3 will probably never top SHODAN's famous "look at you, hacker" moment, but you can't fault the writers for chasing that high.
OtherSide bought back the publishing rights to System Shock 3 from Starbreeze earlier this year, and was actively searching for a new publisher as of May. Warren Spector, producer of the original System Shock, joined OtherSide shortly after the project was announced. There's still no release window for the game, but it's expected to launch on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
