Team Rocket Is Back For Real This Time In Pokemon Go

A new Special Research quest revolves around the Poke-villains.

Shadowy Pokemon have been popping in and out of Pokemon Go, and after a short teaser, it looks like Team Rocket is invading PokeStops all over. Now called "Team GO Rocket," the Pokemon villains are out in full force, and players are now being tasked with defeating them and rescuing their Pokemon.

Pokemon with shadowy auras started showing up earlier this week, with creepy red eyes and dark purple energy emanating from them. At the same time, Team Rocket members started showing up at seemingly glitched PokeStops, commanding these shadow Pokemon and challenging trainers.

Then, just as soon as they showed up, they disappeared again. But after a short wait, Team Rocket is back in full force alongside a new Special Research quest. It looks like a PvE storyline where you have to take back PokeStops from "Team GO Rocket" and rescue the Shadow Pokemon.

Once you defeat a Team GO Rocket member, you get the opportunity to catch their Pokemon and then purify it. Once purified, these Pokemon return to normal, and can even become stronger than their normal counterparts due to their gratitude, according to a news post from the Pokemon Go team.

Team Rocket has been teased for Pokemon Go a few times, even with a hot air balloon at a European festival. Despite it being a few years since Pokemon Go's huge arrival on the mobile scene, it shows no sign of slowing down. Now if only Harry Potter: Wizards Unite could steal some of that magic.
