Tetris 99 is Getting a Luigi's Mansion Crossover, Complete with Gooigi's Cold, Emotionless Stare

Do those Tetrominos look sticky to anyone else?

If you're in the mood for a new Tetris 99 theme, then start warming up those T-spins. Nintendo's holding another Maximus Cup this weekend, and this time it's a tie-in event with Luigi's Mansion 3—as before, if you net enough points over the weekend you'll get a spooky Luigi's Mansion 3 theme in Tetris 99 for keeps.

For those who haven't dabbled in Nintendo's tournaments for its Tetris battle royale, the rules are pretty simple. While the first few Maximus Cup tournaments gave away Nintendo Gold Points to the top scorers, more recent events have given away background-and-music themes for Tetris 99 to anyone who can amass 100 points over the weekend.

The Luigi's Mansion 3 Maximus Cup will run from midnight PT on Friday, October 25 to 11:59pm on Monday October 28. Winning a single game will grant you the Luigi's Mansion 3 theme in all it's gooey glory. Thankfully, for the less Tetris-adept among us, these Maximus Cups are pretty generous with the points for other players, so getting to 100 points total should only take most folks a few games:

  • 1st Place: 100 points
  • 2nd Place: 50 points
  • 3rd Place: 30 points
  • 4th - 10th Place: 20 points
  • 11th - 30th Place: 15 points
  • 31st - 50th Place: 10 points
  • 51st - 90th Place: 5 points
  • 91st - 99th Place: 1 point

Tetris 99 is available to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. You don't need to have paid for any of Tetris 99's premium DLC packs in order to play in the Maximus Cups. Unfortunately, if you've missed out on previous crossover skins like those for Super Kirby Clash or Fire Emblem: Three Houses, there's no way to earn them retroactively.

It needs to be said: the Luigi's Mansion 3 theme for Tetris 99 probably could've been even more goo-forward. Given the disturbing in-fiction details we've learned about Gooigi's origins, it's a bit concerning to see Gooigi's blank face serve as the theme's K.O. marker. Is that Nintendo's subtle way of telling us that Gooigi really is what Luigi becomes when he dies? Maybe we'll find out more when Luigi's Mansion 3 comes out for the Switch on Halloween, October 31.
