The PlayStation Vita is nearing the end of production in Japan. It will mark the end of eight years for Sony's last portable gaming device.
The official PlayStation Japan website notes that its two remaining models, PS Vita Black and PS Vita Blue, will soon end shipments. It's an indirect message to customers that this is their last chance to buy a Vita in Japan before production ends.
Gematsu noted that a similar message was posted on the PlayStation 3 Japan webpage two months before production ended for Sony's last-gen console. A similar timeframe could be expected given how Sony has not confirmed a date for when PS Vita production is set to end.
The news confirms comments from PlayStation Japan last September, which announced it was ending the PS Vita line of hardware in 2019. PS Vita cartridges are no longer in production, and PS Vita games are no longer offered as part of PS Plus.
Time will tell whether Sony will dip into the portable market again. With the Nintendo dominant in the handheld space thanks to the Switch and 3DS, as well as Sony's own success with the PlayStation 4, the future of Sony portable consoles is anyone's guess.
