The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening's Most Famous Song Now Has Soul-Shredding Lyrics

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening's Most Famous Song Now Has Soul-Shredding Lyrics

Let's be honest, you knew it wasn't going to be an uplifting ditty.

Even though it looks adorable, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening doesn't tell a carefree tale. Its setting, Koholint Island is a mysterious, ethereal place, and Link's friends and foes are big on cryptic speeches warning him that everything might vanish at the morning's light. Nintendo seizes on Koholint's mysterious nature with a new Link's Awakening remake trailer that gives us lyrics to "The Ballad of the Wind Fish." Just take whatever cheerful feelings you woke up with and throw them right in the garbage, because you won't need them anymore.

"The Ballad of the Wind Fish" is a leitmotif in Link's Awakening that's "sung" often by Marin, the girl who finds Link passed out on Koholint's shores. The Game Boy's wee sound chip couldn't supply anything as elaborate as actual vocals, so this new trailer marks the first time we've heard lyrics for Marin's song. Japan's latest trailer for Link's Awakening has its own version of the song that's (of course) in Japanese.

The spot is only 30 seconds long, so we don't get to hear the full song. The last line we hear before it cuts out is Marin pleading "stay with me." Thanks for that, Nintendo. That's great.

The Link's Awakening remake is due out for the Switch on September 20. It's a quality remake of a fantastic game, even though there are some frame rate issues. Remember to visit our Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening guides, because Koholint is packed full of heart pieces and hidden seashells, and the Eagle Tower dungeon will swallow your soul.
