One of the better mods for 2K Games and Firaxis Games' 2012 reboot was The Long War, which extended the basic single-player campaign into something much, much larger. Sixteen classes, updated and modified perks, new technologies, voice packs, new tiers of XCOM weaponry, the addition of fatigue, and an improved interception game made the reboot into something closer to the original X-Com. The Long War has been downloaded more than 844,000 times on Nexus Mods.
The team behind the mod eventually became Long War Studios and helped Firaxis with the launch of XCOM 2, providing the Alien Pack, Perk, and Laser Pack mods. That team now has a new name, Pavonis Interactive, and a new project: The Long War 2.
According to the official Pavonis Interactive website, The Long War 2 isn't the studio's only project, but "The Long War" name will remain tied to the XCOM franchise. Pavonis will also be working to develop its own independent titles, including Terra Invicta, a "grand strategy alien invasion" game.
Details on The Long War 2 will be revealed in the coming weeks, according to Firaxis and Pavonis.
We loved XCOM 2 when it launched earlier this year, but does it hold up? Plus, some thoughts on the console version.
