If you want next-gen scares, at least one developer is already chomping at the bit to deliver them. Bloober Team, makers of last year's Blair Witch game, Layers of Fear, and more just announced The Medium, a new psychological horror game and its second title confirmed for a frightening next-gen debut.
The Medium made its debut on today's Xbox Series X games showcase, Microsoft's first presentation dedicated solely to showing off titles coming to Microsoft's next console. It stars Marianne, herself a spiritual medium who's investigating the murder of a child. Her quest for answers looks like it'll entail danger in both the physical and spiritual realms.
Marianne, it seems, isn't entirely in control of the visions she sees of the spirit realm. One moment, it's grey, dismal reality—the next, her world flashes like fire and brimstone. There are also glimpses of some huge, horrifying creatures out in the mist.
Of special note, Bloober Team's Arkadiusz Reikowski is collaborating with long-time Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka on The Medium's soundtrack.
Bloober Team's been all-in on psychological horror since the release of Layers of Fear in 2016, and The Medium will actually be joined by one of the studio's past releases on next-gen hardware. Last month, the developer announced Observer: System Redux, an upgraded and expanded re-release of its 2017 cyberpunk horror game starring the late Rutger Hauer.
Both The Medium and Observer: System Redux are targeting release in holiday 2020, near the planned launch of the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5.
