The New Overwatch Junkrat and Roadhog Cinematic Has a Cool Cowboy Bebop Reference

See you later Junk Cowboy.

To celebrate the new Junkertown map, Overwatch put out a Roadhog and Junkrat cinematic chock full of references and homages to Looney Toons cartoons like Wile E. Coyote, to an anime opening that pays tribute to Cowboy Bebop.

Blizzard announced a new escort map for Overwatch today at Gamescom. The new Junkertown map is supposedly the home of both Junkrat and Roadhog, but as the cinematic shows, they've both been kicked out after stealing from the Junkertown Queen. As revenge, the two plot to offer her a bunch of gold, but instead plan to blow her up (as per the Junkrat way). Unfortunately for them, Junkrat is the one coming up with the plan so you know it doesn't go well.

The absolute best bit however is the short little opening that is definitely a Cowboy Bebop reference, right down to Junkrat scatting along with the jazz opening. Just give it a look for yourself.

While it might not be a one-to-one re-enactment, the similarities are pretty striking if you watch the original Cowboy Bebop opening. Everything from the jazz-y bopping, to the color-coded introduction scene is pretty similar. Just watch the original anime opening.

Pretty similar right? Of course I have no doubt that Blizzard is the kind of company to reference a seminal anime like the 1998 classic, Cowboy Bebop. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, Cowboy Bebop is an anime about a crew of outlaw bounty hunters traveling space from one misadventure to the next. And while Junkrat and Roadhog are firmly villains, their carefree attitude certainly echoes the crew of the Bebop.

The animated short is pure comedy, which we haven't really seen in an Overwatch short before. Junkrat and Roadhog are given some stellar characterization, including the obvious fact that Roadhog is the brains of the duo. I also really enjoyed the slapstick nature of the short, which again comes with the Junkrat/Roadhog territory.

No word yet on when Junkertown will be playable on Overwatch.
