The Secret World Relaunching As a Free-To-Play "Shared-World RPG"

This Spring, the beleaguered MMO becomes something else.

Funcom announced today that The Secret World, its modern-day MMO based on myths, legends, and conspiracy theories, is being relaunched as Secret World Legends. Legends is a "shared-world action RPG" that will be free-to-play, focusing more on solo and small-group play, as opposed to its current MMO status. Funcom also promises "completely revamped combat, a newly designed progression system, and updated visuals".

"Over the course of five years, The Secret World has created a truly memorable RPG universe that stands out to this day for the uniqueness of its dark setting and tone, the depth of its quest design, and the high quality of its voice acting throughout," said Funcom CEO Rui Casais. "Secret World Legends uses that foundation to mark a new era for the game, offering a fresh start for newcomers and long-time fans alike, delivering a captivating journey that can be enjoyed entirely on your own or with friends."

"One of our biggest goals in relaunching the game has been to reimagine the core gameplay experience in a way befitting a modern-day action RPG," said Secret World Legends executive producer Scott Junior. "Secret World Legends features combat that feels more natural, deep systems that are more intuitive, better structuring of the early game for new players, and improved mission flow to strengthen the pace of progression for players."

Secret World Legends will use a new in-game currency called Aurum as the basis of its free-to-play economy. Aurum can be used to buy additional weapon pages, extra inventory space, additional characters, exclusive vanity items, and more. Players will get one character slot under the free account. Secret World Legends will also have the Patron Rewards Program, which is a monthly subscription offering additional bonuses, but the fee price isn't covered.

Utilizing the content that has been added to the game since its launch five years ago, Funcom is promising 100 hours of story to players. At launch, this will include the eight original regions of MMO, with Tokyo, raids, and the rest of current Secret World content coming afterward. Funcom also plans to add new story content to the game.

Players with existing The Secret World accounts can link them to the new Secret World Legends account system. Oddly enough, the original The Secret World will remain available to play, Funcom just won't be supporting the game with new content. In fact, veterans start at the beginning in Secret World Legends.

"Given the sweeping extent of the changes being implemented, Secret World Legends will reset story progression for anyone who joins, offering a fresh start for all players," said Junior in a Letter From the Producer. "This will not erase your progression in The Secret World though! But we hope you consider starting anew in Secret World Legends to experience all the new content and updates coming to the game. We’ve made some major improvements to the game and server, so Secret World Legends will have its own client. "

I've always found The Secret World to be an interesting and unique style of MMORPG, but I don't have friends who play it and have never found the time to devote to it. Hopefully, this gives the game some visibility, because I've really enjoyed it when I've played it. It a world where Conan Exiles is proving to be successful for Funcom, this shift for The Secret World makes sense.
