The Voice of Halo's Master Chief Has Something to Say About Pineapple on Pizza

Steve Downes had to let people know how he *really* feels about Hawaiian pizza.

Cameo is a deeply weird website. You can browse through its list of talent to find famous actors and athletes who will record short, personalized messages for hundreds of dollars. You also find a lot fading stars and reality TV washouts who clearly need a break. In the middle ground there are folks like Steve Downes, the instantly recognizable voice behind Halo's Master Chief. He's on Cameo, and he'll say a lot of things for you—he just won't endorse putting pineapple on pizza.

That's what Halo fan and video creator Greenskull discovered when he paid for a clip from Downes, asking him to say "Hawaiian Pizza is my favorite food on the Citadel." Downes, who may or may not have picked up on the Mass Effect joke, evidently felt he had to set the record straight on his own pizza topping preferences. Then, audio in hand, Greenskull booted up Halo 3:

The resulting short clip of Downes, not quite in character as the Master Chief, is way funnier when synced up with Spartan 117's little twitches and head bobs. There's even some nice camera work that adds to the drama: the tight zoom on the Chief's visor as Downes says praising pineapple on pizza "goes against everything [he holds] dear" is a great touch.

"I think pineapple on pizza is an abomination," says Downes, practically growling on the last word. "However, if it's okay with you, I guess it'll have to be okay for me."

In the end, Greenskull also gets the sound bite he wants with a simple bit of editing, but he deserves a big kudos for releasing the whole clip and recording the Halo 3 footage to go with it. Let the record show that Steve Downes is a man of principle, and while he'll entertain your weird Cameo requests, he won't lie about a serious topic like whether pineapple belongs on pizza or not. Take it as a sign that we won't be seeing Master Chief kick back with a slice of Hawaiian in Halo Infinite later this year.
