Anime Expo unveiled its plans for a digital conference today. Dubbed "Anime Expo Lite," it will feature a free two-day livestream featuring a number of partners, but what's interesting is the key art that was planned for the original Expo's program guide cover: it features the cast of The World Ends With You.
The announcement doesn't expand much further on why the guide was set to feature that game's cast. The livestream is set to air on July 3 and 4, with more details to come in the weeks ahead.
The World Ends With You isn't quite a Square Enix RPG on the scale of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but its one-off entry on the Nintendo DS has earned a cult following over the years. Telling the story of several characters roped into a death game, it has a style, combat system, and story distinctly unique from most other video games.
It surfaced again with a Nintendo Switch port in 2018, bringing the game to more players even if it was through a less-than-ideal control scheme. That release also included a new epilogue that left off on a pretty sizable cliffhanger.
Whether this indicates that The World Ends With You is being positioned for some kind of revival is unclear. An anime-specific expo seems like an odd place to tease such news, but considering The World Ends With You is one of my favorite games of all time, I'd definitely be open to the possibility. Maybe the Anime Expo Lite stream in July will hold some more answers.
