Trails of Cold Steel III Under Consideration as PS4 Exclusive

The third Trails of Cold Steel could leave the PlayStation Vita behind.

News by Mike Williams, .

While the first two Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel games were developed for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the sequel may change things. The PlayStation 4 is ascendant and the gulf between that system and the Vita is much larger than the Vita compared to the PS3. In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation (translated via Gematsu), Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo admitted that the company was thinking about how to approach Trails of Cold Steel III.

"We plan to start going at full scale this summer, but we've already completed the basic foundation [on Trails of Cold Steel III]. We're also making new models for Rean and company," said Kondo. "However, for those concerned about hardware, there are a lot of PS Vita users when it comes to the Trails series. We're currently considering whether to do a PlayStation 4-exclusive or to make it cross-platform with PS Vita."

Allowing cross-platform with the Vita would likely be the preference of existing Trails players, extending the sense of hardware continuity. It's largely dependent on what Nihon Falcom wants to do with the title and how much they're willing to push Trails III on PlayStation 4. Given today's news, perhaps the Nintendo NX might get some love from Nihon Falcom as a Vita replacement. Who knows?

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III currently has no release date.

My hunch is that Kondo and crew ultimately roll with PS4/Vita or PS4/PS3/Vita with the final Cold Steel game.

Falcom has always been very good about choosing points in the series when it'd be okay to change platform.

For example, after 3rd on PC, which served as a bridge to the next arc and finished the current arc, they jumped to PSP (where they then ported the first three games for folks) for Zero and Ao. Once Zero and Ao finished, they jumped to Vita/PS3 for the Cold Steel arc. Cold Steel III is the conclusion of this current story arc, so it'd just make more sense to keep those same players on board and then move to PS4/whatever with the next big arc.

    Fingers crossed, anyhow.

That'd be a shame, especially considering I'd probably pick up copies on both platforms.

Time to play the latest round of "What Is Kondo Getting At!" What does it mean? What will it portend? Stay tuned, gentle Falcom fan!

Your last point is an interesting one - it would be really, really great if NX started getting titles like this. The lack of JRPGs relative to playstation in the last couple of generations has been a bit of a shame for Nintendo systems.

Currently 32 hours into TOCS and am eagerly awaiting the Vita sequel. I don't own a PS4 and don't intend to buy one. This is really crappy news.

How about a compilation of all the games so far? Still haven't played this series, so it would be great for new players like me.

Wow, Rean's incestuous little sister is playable? That's news to me.
