Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising Gets a Fresh Reveal and a December Release Date
The game formerly known as Gods & Monsters also looks quite a bit different from the last time we saw it.
Ubisoft Quebec's next game doesn't just have a new name—it has a new look too. Now titled Immortals Fenyx Rising, the open-world first teased back at E3 2019 is vibrant as ever, but today's new trailer unveiled at Ubisoft Forward showed a revamped art style and lots of combat.
Despite being a no-show for over a year now, Immortals is actually coming out quite soon. It'll be launching for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and Google Stadia on December 3, 2020. It's not clear at the moment whether it will receive a next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X or if it will simply work on those consoles via backward compatibility.
Pulling from Greek mythology, Immortals casts players as Fenyx, a human warrior who ends up in a land ruled by a group Greek gods and threatened by the titan Typhon. Upon meeting Hermes, Fenyx sets off on a quest to help the gods regain control of their domains (and, it seems, Zeus and Prometheus are monitoring Fenyx's progress along the way).
Immortals Fenyx Rising promises a massive open-world that, despite the shift in tone from the original E3 2019 reveal, still gives off major The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild vibes. Like that game, Immortals will let players explore—or, as it may be, attempt to explore—the entire world from the get-go.
Google's Phil Harrison popped up on Ubisoft's stream after the trailer and gameplay reveal to add a note about Immortals Fenyx Rising for Stadia. No, he sadly didn't acknowledge the Stadia "Orpheus" leak from earlier this year, but instead announced that prior to launch in December, Immortals will get a free Stadia-exclusive demo featuring an island not seen in the main game.
