This week, the long-awaited demo for Final Fantasy 7 Remake arrived. It seems a little surreal that after years of development, the reimagining of Midgar is just one month away.
Fans have been predictably tearing through it, finding fun easter eggs and even some strange links to the expanded FF7 universe. I'm allowed to dream of a world where Crisis Core also gets remade, okay?
That's also carried the burden of reality setting in about what, exactly, this remake will be. Most notably, we learned that Midgar's best boy Red XIII won't be a playable member of your party in the game. You'll have to wait for another part of the remake to actually play the adorable red lion-pal.
But it's also raised concerns about how clear the messaging around Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been. It will launch on April 10, 2020, and hopefully no one is expect to get the entirety of Final Fantasy 7 rather than the slice that's been portioned out for this first installment.
Either way, it's that time of year again. The biggest games of spring are just on the horizon, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake is already making a bid for being one of the most dominant games in the year's discourse.
Here's the rest of what's been happening this week in gaming news.
From the Rumor Mill
A since-deleted Twitch clip from an Apex Legends team suggest a beta for Riot Games' new tactical shooter Valorant might be coming soon. Since it's set for a summer 2020 launch, that doesn't seem overly far-fetched.
The final DLC character for the first pack of Granblue Fantasy Versus fighters was leaked in a color pack DLC listing. I don't know much about Granblue lore, but Zooey's dragons and weird gunblade-looking sword seem pretty rad.
News and Tidbits
The COVID-19 novel coronavirus continues to hamper events around gaming. The postponing of GDC was this weekend's big story, but other events are starting to follow suit. Some, however, are standing firm in their dates. Evo 2020 is still slated to happen in Las Vegas, and the Entertainment Software Association told Vice that it is moving "full speed ahead" with E3 2020 planning.
In the U.K., Control and Death Stranding lead the BAFTA Game Awards nominations with 11 apiece. The British awards show looks to be a mirror of the 2020 DICE Awards, where Control and Death Stranding took home a large number of trophies, though the goose ultimately stole the show. What can I say? It's a good, terrible goose.
Nintendo is one of the companies impacted due to high demand of Switch.- Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) March 3, 2020
Recently they have been looking to ramp up production at the Yantai, Shandong (China) plant to meet demand.
Shortages in Japan are already common. Impact in the West will be more clear in Q2. https://t.co/kJsfiV6eqa
Sorry to those who are disappointed you can no longer play #thelongdark on GeForce Now. Nvidia didn't ask for our permission to put the game on the platform so we asked them to remove it. Please take your complaints to them, not us. Devs should control where their games exist.- Raphael van Lierop (@RaphLife) March 1, 2020

Happy 20th anniversary to the PS2!- Cory Barlog (@corybarlog) March 4, 2020
Not only was it an incredible piece of hardware that effectively launched my game making career but its also the system that empowered TONS of great developers to produce (in my opinion) the best damn library of any console generation!

I know everyone is stressed today and there's a lot at stake, and I also know what I'm about to say will upset a lot of my followers, but I think it's important to say that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake feels like it needs a jump button even though there wasn't one in the original.- Mike Drucker (@MikeDrucker) March 3, 2020
