USgamer's One-Hit Wonders Grapple With an NES Classic

Bob, Jeremy, Kat, and Nadia swing their way toward victory with Capcom's Bionic Commando.

As promised, the latest episode of One-Hit Wonders takes us back to the series' original premise: Everyone plays until they get hit.

To make that mandate a little easier to uphold, I specifically selected a game where (at least initially) a single hit amounts to death: Bionic Commando for NES. This also happens to be a game that I know almost inside and out, but don't think I was trying to be unfair to everyone else; I know at least one other person on staff has played a lot of this game, so there are no foregone conclusions here.

The thing about Bionic Commando, see, is that you start without the ability to jump or to absorb any damage by enemies. You never gain the power to jump — that's what your bionic arm is for — but you do earn health points with a simple experience system, embodied by the bullets most enemies drop when you gun them down. So the challenge here was to get around the game without jumping, and without picking up those bullets. It's a challenging and interesting game! So have a watch and see how we fared, won't you?

For next time, I've selected another game that should make the one-hit mission equally easy to uphold — and it's one that I don't have any particular expertise in, so I probably need to go practice for a while...
