Axe of the Blood God is our weekly RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey. You can find the previous episodes here.
In this week's episode of Axe of the Blood God (download link here), Kat and Nadia welcome Polygon's Matt Leone to discuss his massive oral history of Final Fantasy VII!
If you haven't read it already, I recommend that you drop everything and go right now. It's an incredibly in-depth piece of historical reporting on one of the most significant games ever made. We're giant fans of Final Fantasy VII here at USgamer and even we learned a bunch of things.
Matt talks about the article's historical context, the process of getting it all together, and what it was like to chat with figures like Tetsuya Nomura, who have lately tended to remain out of the public eye (at least in the west). Afterward, Nadia and I talk about some of what we learned and how it impacts our outlook on Final Fantasy VII. Have a listen!
Also in this episode: We discuss the untimely death of Scalebound and conduct another Persona 4 Golden Report!

Kat and Nadia welcome Polygon's Matt Leone discuss everything we learned from his mammoth oral history of Final Fantasy VII. Uematsu was jealous of Suikoden? Square almost killed off the entire cast? There are a lot of great revelations, and a ton of ground to cover in his outstanding piece of history, and we discuss it all here. Plus! Another Persona 4 Golden Report and the untimely death of Scalebound.
Music from Axe of the Blood God is courtesy of Lena Chappelle, who has also contributed the themes to Active Time Babble and Roleplayers' Realm. I also use music from the RPG Music Pack over at rpgmaker.net. Check it out!
