USstreamer: Get Funky and Retro With Donkey Kong Country [Update: With Archived Video]

Jeremy puts Rare's classic jungle platformer through its paces today at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

"Hmm, what should I feature as today's USstreamer retro stream?" I asked myself as I began to contemplate the day ahead. "Something on Wii U Virtual Console, maybe, for ease of streaming? But something I haven't played on a stream before." Decisions, decisions.

Thankfully, Nintendo made my decision for me when it sent out its weekly eShop update press release, which included not one but six Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land titles for Virtual Console. The whole banana, as it were. I mean, yeah, they didn't include the Game Boy Advance ports of the Super NES games, and we've still never gotten the Japan-exclusive Dinky & Dixie Kong for Game Boy Color. But let's not be greedy, or complain that Japan and the UK got the Kong titles months ago; given the usual slow trickle of Virtual Console releases in the U.S. makes this sudden, unexpected explosion of big-hitters a fond flashback to the halcyon days of 2007, when we'd complain if one of the five VC titles for the week was merely middling in quality amidst a roster of true greats. You don't love what you've got and all that.

And DKC is nothing if not a big-hitter. Arguably the biggest the Super NES ever saw, in fact. Does it hold up more than 20 years later? Not perfectly, and not as well as its sequel, but it should be more than enough to keep us entertained for an hour this afternoon. Join me at 5 p.m. Eastern Time (that's 2 p.m. Pacific and, I dunno, sometime tomorrow in Japan) for a trip back down memory lane. I may need some help remembering the ropes as it's been quite a while since I spent any serious time with DKC, but hopefully I won't embarass myself in front of a live studio audience.

Watch the stream here on USgamer or on our Twitch channel this afternoon! And no, I won't do the DK Rap.
