Valkyria Chronicles 4 Announced for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

There's a planned 2018 release date for Japan, North America, and Europe.

News by Matt Kim, .

After years of waiting, Sega is finally releasing a proper Valkyria Chronicles sequel (the less said about the Valkyria Revolution spinoff the better). Valkyria Chronicles 4 is scheduled to come out on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2018. Better yet it will be coming to North America and Europe as well.

In the year 1935 EC, Europa is caught up in a Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and the Imperial Alliance.Like the previous Valkyria Chronicles, the fourth proper entry into the series will follow an everyman Commander, Claude Wallace, and his childhood friends who join him as part of Squad E.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 brings back the "BLiTZ" Battle System which is a hybrid combo of turn-based strategy and 3rd person action. There will be a new class called Grenadiers, and a new battleship support feature.

Also, composer Hitoshi Sakimoto returns for Valkyria Chronicles 4.

The first Valkyria Chronicles came out for the PS3 back in 2008. While it became a cult-hit that paved the way for two PSP sequels, Valkyria Chronicles 3 never released outside of Japan. Luckily, that won't be the case this time.

Valkyria Chronicles is a strong contender for my favourite PS3 game. I really hope this is good!

I woke up to this news. There was much rejoicing.

Everyone's got their wishlists for things they'd like to see in the new game (and things they don't). But for the moment I just want to bask in the knowledge that we will see its game mechanics once again: there's nothing else like it on Earth.

VC3 refined everything about the first one...apart from the graphics. But the story, characters and mechanics were amazing. If they bring that quality plus the superior art style to the 4th installment? Great things await us.

"Like the previous Valkyria Chronicles, the fourth proper entry into the series will follow Commander Claude Wallace.."

Wrong! Claude Wallace is a totally new character and each Valkyria game has a different main character.

Haven't played any of the VC games and I really should get on that. Does 2 and 3 have any connections to the other game storywise? Would hate to play 4 and not really know characters or settings.

@moochan There's no need to play the other games in the series to get the story in this one. It takes place at the same time as the first and third games. That said, the first game will teach you everything we know about the setting.

I'm guessing the delay on the Switch side is because it was originally going to be released simultaneously for all systems, but no-one planned on making a Switch port, and then the Switch started selling like hot cakes as development on the game started, and Sega started appropriately panicking at the idea of not getting that sweet, sweet gravy train cash.

If the game is good enough (i.e. nearly as good as VC1), I'll be happy to double dip on PS4 and Switch, so I can replay it on the go later.

There are some references and call backs, but overall, the story in each game is self contained. VC4 looks to continue this trend.

This looks very promising! Honestly, I love Valkyria Chronicles, and this is the first of the sequels to get my attention at all.

Glad Sega didn't decide "well, no one like the most recent, terrible entry in the series, so obviously no one likes the series anymore".
