Warcraft 3: Reforged Arrives Next Month with a Rebuilt World Editor

If you've been feeling nostalgic about the golden days of Warcraft 3, the wait won't be much longer for Blizzard's tuned-up version of a classic. Warcraft 3: Reforged will launch on January 28, 2020, and arriving with it will be cross-version multiplayer and, importantly, a rebuilt World Editor tool.

Including an overhaul of the graphics, Warcraft 3: Reforged largely sticks to its guns. All four factions return, with the original voice actors and campaigns, both for Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne expansion. It'll use Battle.net for matchmaking, but players of the Reforged version will be able to play against anyone who's still camping out in the original Warcraft 3.

And, in news crucially relevant to my interests, Warcraft 3: Reforged will include a new World Editor with "hundreds of new triggers, LUA scripting support, new tools for importing models, and more enhancements planned for the future." I have very fond memories of the Warcraft 3 campaigns and spent some time in the regular multiplayer, but my heart lies in the weird, bizarre, slapdash machinations that filled up the Custom Game queue. It's where I found Dota, tower defenses, and so many other games I still enjoy to this day, and I hope this new tool becomes more fertile ground for mod-makers around the world.

The remaster of 2002's Warcraft 3 was announced back in 2018, but it went radio silent until this year's BlizzCon with a multiplayer beta featuring a slimmed-down competitive mode.

It was a nice reminder of Warcraft's RTS roots, and also a handy distraction from Blizzard's ongoing PR nightmare. Both Kat Bailey and I played a bit during the beta period, even streaming a few matches during our Extra Life 2019 stream, and our feelings on it were fairly positive. Hopefully the extra polish and a rebuilt World Editor can bring some life back to an RTS classic.
