The Demon's Souls online servers shut down this year on February 28. While the game is still playable, all of its considerable online functionalities like co-op have ceased. We have video footage of the final minutes of Demon's Souls shared world before the server apocalypse.
The video, taken minutes before the servers for Demon's Souls shut down, shows four players in Boletarian Palace, the World 1-1 of Demon's Souls. The host, two co-op Blue Phantoms, and a Black Phantom. While normally a Black Phantom signals PvP combat, here the four are just hanging out waiting as servers get ready to shut down.
The Souls community has always had its own unique formalities. PvP fights and invasions are usually preceded by greetings in the form of respectful emotes, and sadistic players who purposefully grief players are rare. That sense of respect is on display here in a clip accompanying our diary of the final days of Demon's Souls.
About partway through, the host runs off through the Boletarian Palace to see how quickly they can run through the level and find Ostrava of Boletaria, an ally NPC and one of the main characters in Demon's Souls. While normally friendly, the host angers Ostrava with a backstab, initiating an optional fight.
Just as the fight was getting good, the servers shut down. Mid-combat and defenseless against an enemy NPC, the curtains fell over one of the best, wildly experimental video game online systems. A pretty unceremonious end that could be mistaken for a temporary server issue.
Atlus announced that online services for Demon's Souls would be ending back in November 2017. Since then, Demon's Souls fans were sadly counting down the days until the shared world aspects of the game would disappear. A fitting, sombre ending for a game about wandering ghosts.
