WayForward was listed as one of the developers working with Apple for its new Apple Arcade subscription service, and now we know why. WayForward announced Shantae 5 for Apple Arcade as well as PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Shantae is a 2D, side-scrolling series by WayForward that has roots all the way back to the Game Boy Color when the first game in the series was released in 2002. WayForward followed that up with Shantae: Risky's Revenge on the Nintendo DS, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on the 3DS, and most recently Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
Today we're thrilled to announce Shantae 5! You're invited to join Shantae in a brand-new adventure later this year on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC... AND the newly announced Apple Arcade! WayForward hasn't shown off any of Shantae 5 other than a teaser image published on the company's official Twitter account. We do know that it's the next mainline Shantae game in the series and that it will be available as part of the Apple Arcade subscription service, along with other major platforms.
WayForward also announced Spidersaurs for Apple Arcade. Developed by the same team behind Contra 4, Spidersaurs similarly only has a teaser image published on WayForward's official Twitter account. This title is exclusive to Apple Arcade.
Apple's new Apple Arcade service isn't streaming-based, but rather will allow players to download and install games from the App Store onto their iDevices for a single monthly fee. Apple says this will not include free-to-play games, but rather paid Apps, some of which Apple is helping to fund. Titles include Hironobu Sakaguchi's new iOS game Fantasian, and Beneath a Steel Sky sequel.
