Super NES

The most recent addition to 3DS Virtual Console, Super NES releases only work on New 3DS hardware — not on older models of the system. Unlike NES games on 3DS, though, they offer a 1:1 pixel mode that prevents the system from stretching the graphics and keeps everything looking crisp and bright.

The Essentials

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Rare/Nintendo, 1995
While Donkey Kong Country wowed the world with its visual splendor, the sequel brought the series up to code in terms of gameplay. With improved level designs and a more dynamic duo of characters to control (pokey Donkey Kong was out, replaced by nimble, hover-hair-equipped Dixie Kong), even DKC haters have to respect this one.

EarthBound
HAL/Ape/Nintendo, 1995
While it's priced a few dollars above other Super NES releases, Nintendo can probably afford to get away with charging that premium due to the scarcity and cult demand for this formerly unwanted RPG. A whimsical, wonderful adventure, and an absolute must-play.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Nintendo, 1992
Perhaps the single most influential Super NES game Nintendo ever created, A Link to the Past returned the Zelda series to its top-down exploratory roots while applying a stunning degree of refinement to the formula. You can see the DNA of the original Zelda here, but the addition of elements like puzzle dungeons, overlapping parallel realities, and numerous villages to help (and hinder) Link in his quest make this one of the all-time classics.

Super Mario Kart
Nintendo, 1992
The original Super Mario Kart offers a completely different racing experience from the 3DS's own Mario Kart 7. It's simpler, and it has a smaller roster of racers, but there's still lots to love about this one.

Super Mario World
Nintendo, 1991 The Mario 3 vs. Mario World debate will rage until our species dies away. Happily, you can make the call for yourself by playing both on Virtual Console. A different Mario experience than his 8-bit outings, but no less wonderful for the change.

Super Metroid
Nintendo, 1994
Possibly the only Super NES game more influential than A Link to the Past, Super Metroid has become a belated part of video game canon over the past five or six years as countless indie (and not-so-indie) developers look to this game's magnificent structure and exploratory progression as inspiration. Few match the sheer excellence of this game, though. A mandatory purchase.

Super Punch-Out!!
Rare/Nintendo, 1994
Less famous (and less beloved) than its NES predecessor, this boxing sim offers the same great gameplay and the same vibrant personality — but with an impressive graphical upgrade that brings it more in line with the arcade original.

Worth Playing

Donkey Kong Country
Rare/Nintendo, 1994
A revolution in graphical presentation, but not so much in terms of design. DKC is worth a play, but if you're on a limited budget, hold out for the super sequels.

F-Zero
Nintendo, 1991
The original F-Zero feels rather shallow these days, but it still offers blazing fast speed — so racing fanatics will almost certainly be able to find some amusement here.

Pilotwings
Nintendo, 1991 For a tech demo, Pilotwings is an awful lot of fun. But still, it is a tech demo, and you might be better off saving your pennies for Pilotwings Resort.
