What Game Are You Playing This Weekend?

COMMUNITY QUESTION | We're keeping this week's discussion simple.

Article by USgamer Team, .

Did anything happen this week? Besides World of Warcraft getting a new expansion? Your regular community question organizer was out of town this week on a big rock in the middle of the sea, so she has no idea.

Oh well. That doesn't mean we can't talk about games! For this week's community question, let us know what's keeping you occupied this fair weekend.

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is consuming most of my time, but I also have a few other review titles that might go on the pile. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is right around the corner, as is Guacamelee 2 and The Messenger. Basically, the summer is over and now it's time for games to start ramping up in release cadence. And somewhere in the middle of all of this, PAX West is starting up and the entire USgamer team is going, so that's a good 5 days gone. FIGHT ON!

Caty McCarthy Features Editor

I just got back from vacation (I'm very tan now, thank you), and my big plane game was Dead Cells. I was surprised to find it to be a solid podcast game, as it kept me company while I caught up with R U Talkin' R.E.M. RE: ME?, a.k.a. the pod-of-the-year.

I have discovered I am not very good at Dead Cells, but I'm sticking with it regardless. I was able to fly through the first few areas and the first major boss pretty easily, but it seems like everything past that point is out to get me now. My favorite death so far was on a run where I decided to mess around a level even after finding one of its exits and a challenge realm, only to die in a spectacularly stupid way: falling into spikes. I lost 40-something cells and some blueprints. It was horrible. Dead Cells is one of those games that I honestly feel like I'll never be able to beat. But who knows, maybe I'll have a really good run of it one day. But that day is not today, and I doubt it will be this weekend either.

I’m getting into my first play through of a Gen IV Pokemon game with Platinum. I bought a second 3DS this year for self-trading, and I just moved over the other two starters after restating Diamond a few times. I also usually play a few hours of Pokémon Go spread throughout the day.

As usual, I'm playing at least three different games this weekend: GTA V(PC), Evil Within(PC), Majora's Mask(3DS) and I might finish off the last boss in P5.

Octopath Traveler... Nearly 30 hours in and still feel like I’m just getting started. A big chunk is just the savage and relentless boss fights that hurt so good.

Lately I've been easing up on Octopath Traveler, mostly because my left joy-con has started to experience some seriously annoying drift issues. Nothing like having the menu suddenly go completely nuts while you're in the middle of one of those tense Chapter 4 boss fights. *sigh*

So instead I'll probably chill out with some sessions of Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon: Animal Parade and maybe Kirby's Dream Land 3. I've also started replaying a bit of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice before bed every night, just because it's my favorite AA entry in quite a while and I tend to not go too long without replaying something from the series anyway. I was actually thinking about being a tremendous nerd and playing through every case in the series in chronological order, but I'm too lazy to commit to that timesink just yet.

I'm planning to advance the story in Octopath. I got all the characters, explored the first third of the world and stopped. Going to make a big push and finish all the chapter 2s and then maybe try to finish some side stuff.

In between gaming and other stuff, I'm playing a cute little mobile game called Sdorica. It's very cute! I like the art and the music.

MotoGP08 for the PC. It's motorcycle racing from CAPCOM. I got it at BigLots a long, long time ago. Bet you'll never expected that, huh? Today, I just test rode a GSXS 750 and Ninja 400. Should I bite the bullet and get drop 5k to 9k for a new bike? I'm hoping this game is gonna satiate my urge.

I'm playing two games at once.

Prey has quickly become one of my favorite games ever. I mentioned it in Caty's article on Gone Home, and it is just a brilliant experience. I can't get enough of it. It does everything correctly.

I also started a new character in Diablo 3, a crusader I named Urbosa, I had a monk named Reah (after one of the goddesses in Ys) and I'm surprised that the Crusader works so well as a ranged fighter. I love tossing my weapon out and then having 3 hammers spin around her. It's a blast. I got inspired to create a new character because of the Diablo 2 coverage. Diablo is just a great game to have to go back to. It's so basic that you don't have to force yourself to do stuff like think. It's perfect for the semester which starts Monday. :(

I... am playing Final Fantasy IV

    The After Years. Again.
That's right, the best Final Fantasy game (after VIII). And let me tell you, Palm's challenge dungeon is a load of crock still.

I'm also plugging away at Etrian Odyssey IV again, got to the third land and retired my party, so now I have to get some levels to be able to actually defeat my foes again. So it goes.

Playing Monster Hunter World on PC now that it's finally out. Sadly it's having some connection issues so trying to play with my friend has been a pretty frustrating experience to say the least. Game however is fantastic so hopefully once Capcom fix the connection problems I'll be questing with my friend more often.

I’ll be continuing with Okami HD on the Switch. I had Okami years ago on the PS2 and I remember beating Orochi and thinking that was the end of the game. Then it turned out that wasn’t the end but it felt like such a good point to stop and play some of my other games that I put it to one side with the intention of returning to it. Of course I never did! Hopefully this time I’ll stick with it.

I "finished" Final Fantasy XIII-2 a few days ago, still working on a PS3 backlog. Which is to say, I got to the final form of the final boss, banged my face on him for a couple of hours, closed the game and watched the ending on Youtube. I don't have patience for the grinding and digging up guides that would be required to see more of the areas of the game and beat the boss.

I started Vanquish last night and it's so much stupid fun. And then because of that, I got this bug to try out Warframe, which isn't really the same at all. I tried it on PC first, and for some reason, it felt floaty to me, and my carpal tunnel started acting up. So instead, I downloaded it on PS4, and for whatever reason, it feels way better. Totally subjective I know.

And then lastly, because of FFXIII-2 and the time travel aspects, and Nadia's posts about Chrono Cross, I started original Chrono Trigger on the DS, that I bought a billionty years ago and never booted up. I played it back when it released on SNES, but haven't replayed it since then.Edited August 2018 by Pandalulz

I'm playing paint my daughter's bedroom and install new carpet...
But IF I get some game time, I will probably mess around a bit on Mega Man X-2 on Switch.
    It's crazy how great I can be at Mega Man X, but I don't have the muscle memory developed for X-2 yet...or X-3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8...
Sigh. It's the same with Mega Man. I'm great at the first 6...but...again...muscle memory.
Maybe I'll play Final Fantasy II (on Origins) a bit. I still love that PSP. Plus who needs muscle memory for that...

@Nuclear-Vomit Yeah that's part of it, but it's more about creating a sense of place and exploring a lived-in environment. It definitely gives some scares when a chair attacks you, but it's such a human place you're exploring that it's just compelling to keep going deeper into it all despite the murderous chairs and mugs.

@JosephB one of my favourite moments in that game, is when you buy a egg at Everdred Park and if you keep it in your pocket for a long time.(try it! :))

Mostly playing MegaMan Legacy Collection, for 3DS (bummed about MM5 emulation)
Sega 3D classics collection (I really REALLY like Power Drift's 3D. the 3D is so real, it just sucks you in, if you guys know of any other really cool 3DS games that use 3D like this, let me know!)
and a lot of Resident Evil 5 on steam.

Unrelated, but make sure to check out the premier of Disenchanted, that new simpsons/futurama animated series by matt groening on NetFlix, episode 3 is my favourite!Edited August 2018 by Funny_Colour_Blue

I was on vacation this week, and took the opportunity to “check in” with a bunch of games from my Switch backlog: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Night in the Woods, Skyrim, Hyrule Warriors... But my time was mostly split among three other games: Captain Toad, Octopath Traveler, and Hollow Knight.

Captain Toad is great for a breather between more intense games. I owned it but didn’t finish it on the Wii U; the bite-sized levels just feel like a natural fit for handheld play. Taking five minutes or so to 100% a level or two at a time is the best way to enjoy the charm of the concept and style.

Octopath Traveler is the first 2D, turn-based RPG I’ve gotten hooked on in a long time. This week I cleared the chapter 2s, then went around finding the shrines and getting the secondary jobs. The characters’ alternate outfits are just adorable. The stories aren’t doing much for me. I like the unconventional structure, and the voice acting is mostly strong, but it’s all pretty trope-y.

I bought Hollow Knight when it launched on Switch and played for a few hours, then lost track of it when I got caught up in Splatoon 2. I was enjoying Hollow Knight, but it can be a daunting experience. I made myself pick it up again this week, and I’m so glad I did. I love the visuals, the dark, eerie, mysterious lore, and the demanding but fair enemy and platforming design. But what I enjoy most is the way the threat of losing Geo makes exploration feel so risky. Wandering a new area and trying to find a Stag Station, a bench, or Cornifer is wonderfully tense.

For this weekend I was trying to keep myself content jumping between Captain Toad and Hollow Knight, but all the glowing coverage of Dead Cells was too much to resist. I bought it this afternoon and have already put a couple hours into it. It’s exactly as awesome as everyone is saying. I’ve gotten to the first boss twice. The first time I had a killer sword and bow but stupidly forgot that I had a healing potion; the second time I had a pretty good sword and the lousy starter bow, healed, but got greedy when he was almost dead and got wiped out.

So Dead Cells will probably be my main weekend game, unless I give in to my other current temptation and buy L.A. Noire while it’s on sale on the Switch eShop.

I'm finishing up my last Chapter 3 in Octopath to grind out some extra levels before I start the Chapter 4s. I might try to seek out the advanced classes soon! Also, I am playing a lot of Onrush. It really has that SSX spirit in the character portraits, costumes and dances. Damn I love these style of arcade games; I wish they were more common. I'm really starting to look forward to Wreckfest on ps4 in November.

@Funny_Colour_Blue It's possible you might have already tried playing this if you enjoyed the 3D of Power Drift so much, but if not I highly recommend Sega 3D Classics Outrun. Stereoscopic 3D and sprite-based scaler racing games are such a perfect fit together!

I would also throw in Gunstar Heroes as well, though it's a run n' gun shooter and not a racer so I'm not sure if you're into that genre at all. If you set the 3D effect to "Pop Out" in the in-game startup settings it looks really eye catching. :)

Omensight! Which is super good, and I'm not one to judge something by it's ending, I like the downer ending, but it doesn't feel like a suitable ending for a game that frames itself as a mystery and an investigation. It's an ending for a fantasy story.

Just finished Tales of Berseria last night. Picked it up because of humble monthly. I pushed myself to finish it but man I don't think this series is for me anymore. Loved the older games but the story and dungeons in this one were painfully bad.
Now to figure out what I want to play now that that's over. Excuse me while I proceed to stare at my steam backlog for hours until I decide...
