All the Big News From Today's Wholesome Direct

Every game from today's soul-cleansing not-Nintendo Direct.

The Wholesome Direct, a stream of game news and reveals centered around decidedly "wholesome" games, premiered today. Its debut broadcast was filled with pastel colors, happy animals, and was overall soothing for my weary soul.

But in the almost-40 minute runtime, a lot of games were shown—55, to be exact. From a black-and-white photo sim to prehistoric farming, bright and bubbly to moody pixel art and more, there was a lot of ground covered in a small amount of time.

The full stream is above, if you're interested in checking it out. But if you need a quick rundown or refresher of what was shown, here are all the big takeaways, as well as a full list of games revealed.

Kind Words Gets a New Room

If you enjoyed last year's Kind Words (lo fi chill beats to write to), there's more content available to add some fresh style to your avatar's room. A new room layout, including some friendly characters lounging about, gives a brand-new aesthetic to writing the kinder, sweeter version of PostSecret responses. It's available now on Steam.

Snacko Hits Kickstarter

I'm not sure who let a cat be in charge of a farm, but if the idea of building out a new island as a cuddly kitten is appealing, Snacko is worth a look. The adorable pixel art blends 2D and 3D into one colorful world, where a cat cares for cows and chickens. Check out its Kickstarter page here.

Little Witch in the Woods

One that stood out to us was Little Witch in the Woods, another sprite-based game about being a tiny witch, exploring the woods and making potions. We don't have much of a sense of what's going on beyond that, but then again, do you really need more? Witches making potions sounds rad. Little Witch in the Woods is coming in 2021.

A Space For The Unbound

A game about two sweethearts in Indonesia during the '90s, A Space For The Unbound is about supernatural occurrences in a small town. It's got a style of its own, some really great pixel art, and I'm always into anything involving the occult and small towns. A Space For The Unbound is coming sometime in 2021.

A Few Familiar Faces

A few indies we've seen at events in the past also popped up during the Wholesome Direct with a few updates. Spiritfarer still looks calming and serene, even if it's about guiding spirits to whatever lies beyond life. The romantic RPG Haven, made by the team behind the stylish boss-rush Furi, showed more of its lush worlds, co-op combat, and even the cooking. I love it when games let you cook.

The little town adventure Garden Story was also featured, showing some of the heroic grape Concord's adventures. Concord is certainly the bravest little grape I've ever seen. Garden Story is still "coming soon," while both Haven and Spiritfarer are expected to launch sometime this year.
