Yakuza 0 Revisits Kazuma Kiryu's Karaoke Past on Jan 24, 2017

Sega has a release date for the Yakuza prequel in North America and Europe.

If you've been waiting to stomp around Shinjuku again, you'll have to wait just a bit longer. Sega has announced that Yakuza 0 will be coming to PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe on January 24, 2017. All the violence and all the mini-games are coming along for the ride!

Yakuza 0 is the prequel to the series. The game takes place in 1988, featuring protagonist Kazuma Kiryu as a fresh young yakuza initiate and Goro Majima as a cabaret owner trying to get back into the organized crime game. For the first time in a numbered Yakuza game, Goro is a playable character. In between all the righteous violence, players can play pool, dance, race cars, manage side businesses, and most importantly... karaoke!

The game will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles and in a post on the PlayStation Blog, associate localization producer Scott Strichart explained some of the choices behind Yakuza 0's localization.

"We're maintaining general-use honorifics in the English script," wrote Strichart. "We're leaving the original Japanese voices intact for the authenticity that only a Japanese voice actor could bring to a yakuza experience, so we took the opportunity to bring the subtitles you're reading closer to what you're actually hearing the characters say."

"Beyond just marrying the subtitles to the spoken word, the honorifics actually play a pretty important role in understanding the respect (or lack thereof) characters have for each other," he added. "Lastly, with this game rewinding to the origins of the series, this was also a chance for us to hit the reset button on the way we refer to the yakuza ranks. Yakuza 0 is going to show you how a power struggle inside a criminal organization looks, and I'll tell right now, it ain't pretty."

Yakuza 0 will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive for $59.99.
