Yakuza: Like a Dragon Will Be an Xbox Series X Launch Game [Update]

Yakuza is a multiplatform brand now, Kiryu-chan!

Update: In press release, Sega has confirmed that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be a simultaneous release on Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, Windows 10, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The only omissions seem to be PlayStation 5 and the long-shot Nintendo Switch version. In fact, the Steam store page for Yakuza: Like a Dragon is live right now!

Last year, when Microsoft announced that Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 were coming to Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass, it was cause for celebration. For so long, the Yakuza franchise was PlayStation only. The wall began to come down with the release of Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami for PC starting in 2018. The Xbox One became the next release platform; you can currently pick up Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami on Xbox One, and Kiwami 2 is coming soon.

It looks like that's the new normal. Today, during the Inside Xbox event, Microsoft and Sega announced that Yakuza: Like a Dragon is coming to both Xbox One and Xbox Series X. In fact, the game will be a launch title on Xbox Series X. Even better, Yakuza: Like a Dragon supports Xbox Series X Smart Delivery, meaning if you purchase the Xbox One version, you get a free upgrade to the Series X iteration.

Another tidbit in the release is the fact that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be cross-save compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. You can carry your game from one platform to the other without fear of losing your progress. Many assumed this was a basic feature of Smart Delivery on Series X, but apparently that's not the case.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a departure for the series. Not only does it not star series mainstay Kazuma Kiryu and the familiar district of Kamurocho, it also drops the real-time action combat for a JRPG-style system. Players take control of gangster-with-a-heart-of-gold Ichiban Kasuga, as he finds himself discarded by the Tojo Clan in the Yokohama district of Isezaki Ijincho. There, Ichiban has to crawl his way back to the position he deserves, likely meeting a number of malcontents and weirdos along the way.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon launched in Japan on PlayStation 4 in January 2020, with Sega announcing a Western release back in 2019. We're still waiting for a firm Western release date, but now we know Yakuza: Like a Dragon is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and potentially PC. A SteamDB entry for a PC release popped up yesterday, in fact.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
