Former Dragon Age Director Opens Yellow Brick Games with BioWare, Ubisoft Veterans

The new Québec City team has some talent behind it.

A group of developers from several notable companies are coming together to form a new independent studio. Yellow Brick Games is made up of longtime creators from places like BioWare, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and Activision Blizzard.

One of the founding members is Mike Laidlaw, the former creative director of the Dragon Age series and, most recently, creative director at Ubisoft. Joining him are Thomas Giroux, Jeff Skalski, and Frédéric St-Laurent B, who all have experience from a number of high-profile publishers. Laidlaw will be chief creative officer, while Giroux will lead as CEO, Skalski as COO and executive producer, and St-Laurent B as game director.

The Québec City, Canada studio will look to develop "original new games of high quality." Its first project has yet to be revealed, though it already has a team of 15 employees (via GI Biz). The rise of remote working has also afforded the studio a chance to recruit outside of the city.

This looks like a fairly promising studio. As a Dragon Age fan, I'm certainly interested in what direction Laidlaw will be taking with Yellow Brick Games' first project. It's also one of a number studios in a larger trend of former big-name devs moving to smaller, potentially remote studios. Several ex-BioWare developers formed Archetype Entertainment earlier this year, while former Activision Blizzard employees have been forming their own studios or collaborating under the new Dreamhaven umbrella.

It'll be interesting to see what a studio helmed by these veterans produces. Hopefully the team will have some more to share sometime in the near future.
