Yoshinori Kitase Weighs in on the Possibility of a True Final Fantasy 8 Remake

Kitase's happy to work on Final Fantasy 7 again, but he'd sooner pass the torch for #8.

We're still a few months out from seeing the first installment of Square Enix's ambitious multi-part Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but that won't stop people from wondering any sequels could receive a similar treatment in the future. Yoshinori Kitase, director of both Final Fantasy 7 and 8, says he'd like to see "the youth of Square Enix" tackle a remake of Final Fantasy 8.

Speaking to Famitsu (translation via Siliconera), Kitase implies that a Final Fantasy 8 Remake is a project he'd like to see Square Enix take on once he has left the company. "For Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the project started from my desire to make Final Fantasy 7 with today's technology while I'm still here at Square Enix" says Kitase.

As the remake's producer, Kitase is revisiting a nearly 23-year-old game with his second run at Final Fantasy 7, and he's still not sure how many episodic installments it'll be split into. All jokes about the Remake's lengthy development aside, it's good that Kitase is focusing on its development and putting the question of a Final Fantasy 8 Remake to the next generation of Square Enix talent

"If the youth that inherits the genes of Final Fantasy can step up and do it, then I'd like to see it made," Kitase says. While there's no question that remaking a game as well-loved as Final Fantasy 7 is difficult, remaking a divisive game like Final Fantasy 8 would present a unique set of challenges. Whereas certain things about Final Fantasy 7 might be untouchable, the temptation to alter Final Fantasy 8—say, to please the Squall haters—could require some courageous new blood to either resist or embrace change.

At any rate, it's best for Square and fans to stay laser-focused on the remake at hand (plus, the Remastered version of 8 is barely a month old). The first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will come to the PS4 on March 3, 2020, and we know it'll be playable in some form on the PS5 as well.
