Zanki Zero Brings Danganronpa's Unique Sense of Humor to the RPG Space

AXE OF THE BLOOD GOD | Ni No Kuni 2, Ultima Online, Zanki Zero and more headline this week's episode of the RPG podcast.

Article by Kat Bailey, .

Axe of the Blood God is our weekly RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford. You can find the previous episodes here.

I'm finally back from GDC, and Nadia and I talk Bard's Tale IV, Ultima Online war stories, and Zanki Zero. Plus, we discuss Ni No Kuni 2's insane opening [download link here].

You've probably seen Ni No Kuni 2's opening by now. I even wrote about it a bit. Now that Nadia has seen it as well, we sit down and discuss it and the tonal whiplash that follows, as well as other observations.

But that's not all! I recently saw Zanki Zero, the new survival RPG by the creators of Danganronpa, and I have thoughts. Plus, I relate some of the best stories from Ultima Online's crazy late '90s run, as well as talk about how Bard's Tale IV reimagines the old-school PC dungeon crawler for the modern day.

Zanki sounds great. Spike Chunsoft has become one of my favorite devs honestly. Was bummed we didn't learn about Project Psync at GDC but at least Uchikoshi tweeted about it.

I love everything about that Zanki Zero trailer! Spike Chunsoft really know how to write stories and hook you with interesting ideas. The characters each representing seven deadly sins, that they are the last 8 people on Earth, and there's some sort of thing where they keep being reborn... it all sounds really interesting.

I'm excited to see how Bard's Tale IV turns out as I definitely wish there were more modern, first-person, party-based RPGs. I like the top-down perspective as well and there are pros and cons to both, but I find the first-person perspective the most immersive when it comes to exploration. In a perfect world, Bard's Tale IV will sell enough copies to make Ubisoft take notice and throw some decent money at Might and Magic Eleven. Blood God be praised.Edited March 2018 by Stepout

I have got to play Oreshika on my Vita. I paid $20 for it but have spent only 10 minutes on it. Zanki sounds a lot like it.

Geez, Redwall indeed has a problem with characters being one dimensional as they can only be evil if you were born into that species.

Level 5 making the mice people antagonists could be interesting in a House of Cards sort of way, but I doubt the company could accomplish that.Edited March 2018 by riderkicker

I think the Dragon Grandpa people got involved with the Lost Dimension people (Lancarse) to do ZZ. I wonder how that'll work out. Despair + Grognard could break some people heh.

The only thing worse than PKers in PK MMOs was the PKK (player killer killers) who turned the servers into rackets after running the PKs off.
