Zelda, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Mario Lead the Nominees in This Year's Game Awards

Here's how to vote for your favorite games.

News by Matt Kim, .

The nominees for the 2017 Game Awards have been revealed, and public voting has begun.

Leading the nominations for this year with six nominations apiece are: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Destiny 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. These titles are followed by Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Persona 5, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, and Cuphead with four nominations, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds with three nominations.

Of these top contenders the big surprise is Hellblade which racked up multiple nominations, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds which is up for Game of the Year. It is a bit disheartening personally to not see Nier: Automata up in the nominations leaderboard.

The Game Awards nominees were chosed by a jury of 51 media and influencer outlets, including USgamer. But while the nominees were selected by the media, voting is open to the public for most of the awards. You can vote either on The Game Awards website, or through several social media channels detailed by Geoff Keighley in this tweet.

The Game Awards will air on Thursday December 7 at 5:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. ET. Geoff Keighley will once again host, and the show will stream on most popular video platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, Twitter, Mixer, and through Steam, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network.

I feel like with most people I both love and hate GOTY. It's such a weird snapshot that may or may not hold up years later. But that's like with most media where top 10 songs in a year can easily be forgotten while a random song that no one ever hard about is fondly remembered. I can't really say what my top games of this year because it really has been an amazing year. Switch being a big win this year but really the biggest win for me is RPG like with Persona 5 and Ys 8 (if you want to count it Golf Story is a fun golf RPG on the Switch). Should start Nier but will wait for Black Friday since its on sale. Metroid came back in a nice remake. And along side a crazy reinvention (for real this time) Zelda game we also got one of the best Mario games. Also the year isn't just over yet with Xenoblade 2 coming out next month which I'm really excited for.

I doubt any reasonable person has the time to play all these games (let alone have a deep love for all the genres); I certainly haven't. That said, Zelda: BotWs all the way down!

Nier automata is easily the best game released this year. The plot, gameplay, and soundtrack are incredible.

Personally I would have to vote for Breath of the Wild if not for how fresh and new it felt, even after the glut of open-world titles that have released in the past few years. The versatility and sense of freedom in this game really is unparalleled. It was probably one of the only games I've played where I actually enjoyed just exploring and messing around in the environments, even with no immediate promise of reward or payoff; in fact being able to traverse any area of the map with little-to-no fetters felt rewarding in itself.

If anything, I think BotW should be remembered as a turning point for Nintendo. post-2015 and the Wii U era in general was pretty rough, but the fact that this single game stole the entirety of E3 2016, plus the massive success of the Switch really helped swing Nintendo back into action.

Best Chinese Game? Most Anticipated? Trending Gamer? Some of these categories are a little funky and pointless. Like, why is their a separate Chinese category?

I do know there are a bunch of games I want to play but don't have the time. Based on what I have played, Breath of the Wild is my favorite and likely won't be dethroned for me personally. I doubt I'll get to playing most of anything I want to play, like ever. Too much cool stuff releases and not enough time to commit to them without being a shut-in.

Just the list of indie games I want to play from just 2017 is massive: Tooth and Tail, Ruiner, Hob, The Signal from Tolva, Night in the Woods, A Hat in Time, What Remains of Edith Finch, Tacoma, The Sexy Brutale, Pyre, Nex Machina, Heat Signature, Hellblade. That's not even counting the AAA stuff that are so obvious I shouldn't even have to list them.

Too many games, not enough time. So, go Zelda because that's all I have time to commit to.

Many contenders for GoTY this year, but the Sonic Mania soundtrack by portuguese composer Tiago Lopes is easily my soundtrack of the year. It's an irresistible mix of japanese retro cool and modern latino-tinged electronica beats.

Yakuza Zero should also be nominated for something - best story at least, but unfortunately games that are released in Jan - Feb seem to be always at a disadvantage when it comes to GoTY awards. Danganronpa 3 should be up for best handheld game over Yoshi & Poochy.Edited 3 times. Last edited November 2017 by SuperShinobi

Just by the slight hesitation before mentioning it in the game of year category, makes me believe Zelda gets the nod. As it should.

Where's Dirt 4 for best racing game? I don't know what my goty is yet but I would choose Wolfenstein 2 for best narrative beyond any doubt.

I am sure that Mario will be the winner this year and Zelda will become the runner-ups. PUBG will sure give some competition to these games but I don’t think that it can outweigh these games.
