Nice article. The Last of Us was so affecting for exactly this reason - a highly controlled tone where everything was consistent. Far Cry has never successfully managed to establish a tone, except in Blood Dragon, which was straight up pastiche.
Tone is everything in cinema, but for me it’s an optional extra in video games - FC4 was a tonal mess, but still great fun to play.

I’m good for at least 3 years. Do not need another console any time soon, guys!!! Seriously! Feels like this gen is finally heating up, not winding down....

Don’t forget it also makes you pay for an extra save slot. The microtransaction of the year so far.

I love this game. The Beacon level was very clever but I got stuck in it way too often. The amazing thing about the time travel level, is how fluid it is.

For me, the single best part of the game was when you go ‘off the leash’ at the end with the pistol that has auto aim. Pure adrenalin rush action.

Everyone talks about Destiny’s gold standard shooter mechanics, but for me TF2’s speed, responsiveness and aggressiveness is unbeatable.

    1. Super Mario Odyssey
    2. Horizon Zero Dawn
    3. Snipperclips
    4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!!!

I dropped out of Zelda BOTW, after 10 hours and the first giant beast. My first Zelda game, so I came in with no preconceptions. Amazing world, but I was very frustrated with the constantly breaking weapons and cooking and assorted busy work that passes for gameplay. It really pushes you into your inventory way too much. Stop-start-stop-start is not a good rhythm. It's a lovely world, but as far as gameplay goes I was shocked by what a drag it turned out to be.

Mario, on the other hand, was joyous from the first five minutes until the end!!!

Technical roughness is not a problem if the story and characters are there. It's sad to hear the one thing your review is unequivocal about is that these are the game's weakest features!

Charm is not something you can replicate easily. ME1 & 2 had it; ME3 mostly didn't, until the Citadel DLC saved the day.

I'm enjoying Horizon ZD for its compellingly simple story, and its charm. Charm is unquantifiable, but you know it when you feel it!!

The thing to accept about the online gaming community is how amazingly conformist it can be. Relative to other subcultures it seems highly subservient to brand identities, is deeply insecure about its self worth, and prey to a massive groupthink.

This metacritic kerfuffle and the crazy comments about the HZD review confirm this - step out of line and you may well be punished.
