I don't think it was gameplay that was the issue with the last Star Ocean game on the 360, it was the godawful characters and story. But mostly the characters...

I dare say I'm going to be one of those sales numbers but I can't help but think all they really need to do to make a successful FF is go old school in design and modern in visuals. I've been interested in Versus since it was first announced, probably more so than XIII, but Duscae left me pretty cold and this doesn't really feel like FF even in a series that has changed dramatically over the years.

There's got to be a sweet spot between the turn based games of old and something that will appeal to a broad audience that they want.

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a Musou game as they all seem to have so much superfluous crap in them now. Really enjoyed the demo of this as is seemed like a totally throwback to playing DW2. Simple is better with Musou, I think.

One thing that always improved my fun no end on the earlier ones was to up the difficulty level a bit. Not sure if that holds true here but I suspect so.Edited 2 times. Last edited February 2016 by Unknown

FFXIII-2 was the only one I unreservedly liked. I thought LR was an interesting concept but I utterly hated the combat system, not to mention the fact that putting a time limit on an free-roaming RPG is the opposite of fun.

I find it really annoying that no matter how charismatic or skilled in manipulation you are it doesn't let you even try to talk them around a bit. I can see that it would be a lost cause to try and sway the BoS but surely there must some scope to get the Institute and the Railroad to see sense. I don't think your character is even given the option to ask about the various things the Institute is doing or question why. This is an area that Bethesda really falls down.Edited 2 times. Oh, take back my comments about the zero performance issues; Certain bits of the Corvega factory got very slide-showy.

Not only have I only seen one solitary bug (subtitles not updating) in a disturbing number of hours play today but also seem to have completely missed the performance issues that some people were complaining about.

I was quite concerned when those comments about the PS4 version came out just before the game released and was expecting a train-wreck but the Digital Foundry article painted a much better picture, especially compared to the XB1 game. Having now played it a fair bit I can't say I even noticed the issues that DF mentioned, especially the drops when fighting the Deathclaw.

Considering how Sega constantly failed to make any decent Shining Force games that in any way resembled the originals that everyone liked I never trusted them to make a decent sequel to SoA. They'd probably turn into a tower defence or a shoot-em-up.

This is definitely one of those games were player feedback seems to be somewhat at odds with critical reaction, with the odd exception.

I'm really enjoying it so far but I'm not far enough in to speculate on whether the appeal wears off pretty quick.
