I'm on team Street Fighter, although Silent Hill is a close second (fwiw the French blu-ray is the version to get).

If we include anime, the list becomes a lot longer. The Persona 3 movies are all quite good.Edited March 2018 by Unknown

So much college hate in this episode ... #NotAllProfessors

A bit disappointed to hear that there won't be a 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI in the West, but honestly not too surprised and their reasoning makes sense. I can't wait to play the PS4 version.

These are some damn good games. All the list needs is Dark Souls 3 and some Danganronpa love.Edited March 2018 by Unknown

Interesting episode this week. I completely agree with Kat that history is still a surprisingly untapped resource for video games. There are some great games in the simulation genre (Europa Universalis IV comes to mind) and Assassins Creed has gotten increasingly more historical, but there is still so much untapped potential - especially for RPGs.

That said, as a historian (teaching at a UK university) I have to say that I have zero interest in Kingdom Come. It's not just the relatively boring, Eurocentric source material, but also the vibe of vulgar historicism that the game gives off. It reminds me of the type of historical reeneactors who insist on accuracy for its own fetishistic sake, but nonetheless focus purely on the narrow aspects of history that conforms with their worldview.

If the PS4 had the same level of backwards compatibility as the PS3 it would be an easy choice. As it stands, I would probably go with Kat's almost-choice of PS3 for the reasons she (and Caty) stated.

But it would be tough - I would be giving up Nier Automata, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, MHW, SFV, and Yakuza 0 for Persona 3 FES, Persona 4, Silent Hill 1-3, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the Mass Effect trilogy, Yakuza 2-5, Red Dead Redemption, Legacy of Kain, and many more.

Great episode, I really enjoyed the spoilerific discussion of RPG endings. We don't usually get good in-depth comparisons of them them since people are so wary of ruining games for future players.

My own inclination is towards the type of endings that are determined by your actions throughout the course of a game. I still remember the feeling of surprise (and not a small bit of satisfaction) when my Vault Dweller shot the Overseer at the end of Fallout 1, instead of quietly accepting his destiny.

As much as I love JRPGs, I'm usually a bit annoyed by the "true ending" model, requiring very specific actions and pathways. To me, multiple endings should be about multiple viable endings, rather than a bunch of bad or so-so endings and only one true conclusion providing narrative closure.

I'm still playing quite a bit of 3DS. No doubt that's in part because I didn't pick up the handheld until a year ago, which means that my backlog is still huge and full of games I really enjoy. At the moment I'm playing SMT IV, Fire Emblem Conquest, Corpse Party, and several different virtual console titles (another important draw).Edited January 2018 by Unknown

Great news! I almost picked up a copy of Dark Souls over the holidays, but happy to be able to grab a remastered edition in a few months instead.
