Super Mario Bros.- The initial spark

Final Fantasy VII- Not only introduced me to rpgs, redefined the scope of what video games can do to bring emotional storytelling to the table, to a degree I had never before considered. Easily my most influential.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Further fanned games as immersive, atmospheric experiences.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution- Deepened my love of fighting games and made me appreciate meticulous game desing as an artform.Edited Yesterday by Unknown

Naw, optimism isn't the same as utopian visions of the future, which Star Trek (particularly Next Generation) is guilty of, and glad DS9 pokes at.

@NiceGuyNeon The comparison is mostly Yakuza is like Shenmue if they actually made a fun game out of it (or so I've been told, I've never actually touched Shenmue)

Good thing they added the Japanese audio, otherwise there's no way I'd give it a chance.

@Flipsider99 It's interesting how complex an ideal rpg should be. Maybe I'm too much an rpg guy to notice, but I don't I can name many rpgs that get widely regarded as being to complex to get into. Western rpgs, especially those in the crpg tradition can be a bit much, but japanese console rpgs? I usually see overly easy and simplistic gameplay being a common criticism of the genre. Personally I enjoy finding jrpgs have more than usual going on in its battle system. I think P5 has solid middle ground combat (although I think P4 with fewer elemental types was actually tighter).

I love FFVI, but the battle system isn't one of the first things to come to mind when I think about it. If anything the battle system is a little too bland in the later stages of the game.

Yeah I'm still a bit ambivalent about P5. I enjoyed it for the most part, and there's no doubt parts of it are remarkably good, but I didn't connect with it's characters or themes anywhere near the way I did with P3 and 4. And as much as I love Meguro's music, Beneath the Mask REALLY wore thin for me.

@Arvis-Jaggamar Well 4.5, and before last gen hardware usually only lasted 5 -6 years.

That said between rising development costs and "games as a service" model being more prevalent I doubt most major developers are in any hurry for new hardware right now. 2020 or 2021 sounds about right.

Ocarina of Time. Partly because I could't afford many new games and partly because it was that much better than anything else on the system, it the only game I've beaten in the double digits, probably 12-15 times. Kinda wished I hadn't played it that much honestly, now I know the game so well I never want to go back and revisit it, but yeah magical game.

@VotesForCows No these are all main stage games. Still preliminary, but I'd be very surprised if Cross Tag has more entrants than GG.

Guys, Nintendo isn't going to step in on this. Publishing a DQ game exclusive to your system is vastly different than localizing a third-wheel version of a game that is going to be overshadowed by prettier versions on competitors' platforms.
