I don't understand the point of posts like this one. The game is in open beta, which you do acknowledge, but the whole piece reads like a review and in my experience many readers will treat it as one.

The company has JUST started adding narrative-driven missions...they've only recently hired a writer to flesh out the story the players will experience once the game is, y'know, finished.

    You say:
"As a traditional retail game, there's not really anything here to spark much excitement."

Well y'know, when it's more than a bunch of discrete game systems hanging together in a loose framework, maybe it'll be more exciting.

I expect typical gamers to behave like this, but when professional gaming journalists start treating "Beta" like a marketing tool, they lose all credibility in my eyes.

Firefall's beta is a real beta. It's still very much a work in progress. Will it wind up being a great game? I don't know...my crystal ball is out on loan.

But I don't think it's all that surprising that an incomplete game feels....incomplete!

Not to be an ass but, I keep seeing Julie Larson Green listed as "in charge of Xbox hardware" but you might as well say Ballmer is in charge of Xbox hardware.

Larson Green is in charge of the "Devices and Studios Engineering Group". Note the "GROUP" in that title.

Included in this group is the Xbox hardware, sure, but so is the Surface, phones, and even the supply chain for hardware.

In other words, it's a BIG group and I'm sure each sub-component will have its own boss. I don't know who will be 'the Xbox Boss' but I suspect whomever he or she is, that person will report to Larson Green, who in turn reports to Ballmer, presumably

The only reason I feel this is important is because I see on other sites people freaking out because "Windows people" are in charge of the Xbox (Larson Green used to head up the Windows division) but I don't think that's accurate.

I don't work at Microsoft and I could be wrong, but that's how I see things.

I pre-ordered both mostly because an unexpected freelance gig put an extra $1500 in my bank account the week of E3...it was like fate was telling me to get both.

If I had to choose though, PS4 would win. I'm a Sony fanboy and PS+ is such a great value...

I've been in the beta of this for eons and I really WANT to like it but every time I start to play I just get kind of bored. The combat system is fun but I don't feel like I have any goals to work towards. It's a sandbox so there's no quest goals, which is fine, but it's not enough of a "virtual world" to inspire me to come up with my own goals, aside from 'get more powerful.'

I'll try it again though...they keep adding stuff. Maybe it'll click the next time.

Tangent: Was delighted to see a Kat Bailey byline; I've missed your work. Hope you get to move beyond traditional reviews.

Sadly Sony has trained me to wait to get titles like this as Playstation Plus freebies... or at least at sharp discounts.

Article would be great for a mainstream site, introducing people to these games. For an enthusiast site, I think the first half was probably very familiar ground to most gamers: who hasn't heard of The Sims after all?

Second half, covering somewhat more obscure titles, was much more interesting to me personally. Would love to see more on Life Sims outside of the 'mainstream'.

No love for Jack Tretton? C'mon, he's gaming's "Everyman" and always comes across as pretty likable at the pressers.

Ballmer is only there temporarily (directly heading the entertainment division I mean). The Human Fist Bump (Phil Spencer) will probably get the job.Edited July 2013 by Unknown
